Back Care Classes

It's safe to say that many of us suffer from back pain at some point during our lives.  It may be a problem with your pelvis, lower back, upper back or neck.  It may be down to simple wear and tear, pregnancy, poor posture, injury, illness or any one of a plethora of other causes.  Back pain can be debilitating and can limit participation in and enjoyment of even the simplest pleasures.

Consider the analogy of a car, which needs filling with petrol weekly and other regular checks such as water, tyre pressure and break fluid to prevent any inconvenient break downs, you may even invest your time polishing it to a high shine.  The spine also needs care and maintenance to reduce or even prevent pain and injury.  Joints (of which the spine has many) need to be mobilised and lubricated to make movements easier and reduce stiffness and wear and tear.  Muscles need to be stretched to prevent tightness and imbalances in length and strengthened to prevent weakness and imbalances in strength.

All of our classes are very much back care orientated, although they also focus on strength and muscle balance, posture, muscle tone and flexibility.  Each session begins by carefully and systematically loosening joints, especially in the spine, before going on to strengthen and stretch the muscle groups essential for a healthy pain free back.  A spine needs to last a lot longer than a car, but many of us don't expect it to need any maintenance.

Existing participants have a range of conditions affecting the spine such as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, spondylosis, osteoporosis, bulging discs, fused vertebrae, facet joint problems, exaggerated kyphosis, scoliosis, and non specific lower back pain.  All participants are able to benefit from safe and specific exercises, modified where necessary, and made more comfortable by the use of a range of small equipment.

Several exercises from the original Joseph Pilates repertoire could be harmful to your back condition and many instructors are unaware of this.  Our Instructors are not only qualified at either level 3 or 4 but are also SpineSafe qualified to help you take care of your back.
